On Thursday, December 16th, we hosted a webinar featuring Drs. Ellen Pikitch and John Bohorquez, both of Stonybrook University, detailing results from their new paper published in Science Advances that provides the first comprehensive and publicly available database of area-based marine conservation in China’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The paper examines 326 sites that conserve, to a varying degree, almost 13% of China’s seas and address multiple conservation and fisheries goals. In addition, the authors:

  • Assess the distribution of the protected areas across different habitats as a measure of ecological representativeness;
  • Analyze China’s progress towards meeting international conservation; and
  • Recommends pathways for management improvement going forward.
