On Wednesday, December 9, 2020, Dr. Stephan Munch and Dr. Michelle Masi presented new research to apply empirical dynamic modeling (EDM) to fisheries management. Dr. Munch gave an overview of EDM and shared results from his previous research to explore EDM as a method to forecast fish abundance and inform ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management. Dr. Munch then announced a new research project in collaboration with Dr. Masi and NOAA’s Southeast Fisheries Science Center to apply EDM to shrimp fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico. This project is an exploratory method to strengthen the assessment model for brown, pink, and white shrimp fisheries, which were recently placed under a “research phase.” Learn more about Dr. Munch’s and others’ previous work with EDM here.
