The Lenfest Ocean Program seeks to fund projects that elevate Indigenous Peoples in sharing their traditions, culture, knowledge, and wisdom to improve evidence-based decision-making for the management, conservation, and restoration of coastal marine species, habitats, and ecosystems. Until recently, Indigenous Peoples' ways of knowing were not considered in planning and management decisions, prompting recent calls to rectify this situation. Thus, the Lenfest Ocean Program is issuing a request for proposals (RFP) to support:

  • Identification, analysis, and/or communication of Indigenous Knowledge and wisdom (where it is culturally appropriate); and
  • Engagement approaches that facilitate the inclusion of this knowledge into ocean and coastal management decisions.

Individuals or groups interested in applying to the RFP should read the “Including Indigenous Ways of Knowing in Decision-Making for Ocean and Coastal Management, Conservation, and Restoration (PDF)” document linked below carefully for information about the competition process and requirements. This opportunity is open to individuals or groups located within the United States (including all U.S. territories) and Canada.

Update: The indirect cost threshold for proposals has been increased to 40% of the total grant amount. Please note, this supersedes what is currently stated for indirect costs in the Including Indigenous Knowledge in Ocean and Coastal Evidence-Based Decision-Making – Request for Proposals (PDF)
