Accounting for Predators in the Peruvian Anchovy Fishery

OVERVIEW

The Peruvian anchovy fishery is the second largest fishery in the world. Caught almost exclusively for the production of fish oil and fishmeal to supply the growing aquaculture industry, Peruvian anchovies account for 30 percent of the total worldwide fishmeal trade. This project develops an ecosystem model of the Peruvian anchovy fishery which evaluates the wider impacts of fisheries management decisions on predators, prey, and the functioning of the marine ecosystem.

RESUMEN CIENTIFICO de un nuevo estudio en la revista Marine Policy (Políticas Marinas): La pesquería peruana de anchoveta es la pesquería más grande del mundo basada en una sola especie y provee un tercio de la harina de pescado del planeta. Pero un estudio económico reciéntemente publicado muestra que el consumo de pescados y mariscos en Perú– incluyendo a la anchoveta y otras especies – genera más del doble de los ingresos domésticos y tres veces el empleo que la producción de harina y aceite de pescado.
