The Peruvian anchovy fishery is the second largest fishery in the world. Caught almost exclusively for the production of fish oil and fishmeal to supply the growing aquaculture industry, Peruvian anchovies account for 30 percent of the total worldwide fishmeal trade. This project develops an ecosystem model of the Peruvian anchovy fishery which evaluates the wider impacts of fisheries management decisions on predators, prey, and the functioning of the marine ecosystem.
New Paper:"Valuing Seafood: The Peruvian fisheries sector," Posted November 2013 in Marine Policy. Peruvian anchovy is the largest single-species fishery in the world, and it supplies one-third of the world’s fishmeal. But a new economic study published in the journal Marine Policy shows that human consumption of seafood in Peru—including anchovies and all other fish species—generates more than twice the domestic revenue and three times the jobs as the production of fishmeal and fish oil. See below for videos, summaries in English and Spanish, and the full paper.
