Grant-Making Criteria for Developing Useful and Usable Marine Science
A philanthropic perspective
Funding organizations play an important role in shaping scientific research intended to inform management and policy. However, practical examples of how funders do such work are not widely available. We have published a paper in Frontiers in Marine Science laying out the grant criteria and guidance questions we used to bring researchers, managers, practitioners, and stakeholders together to design the project, Can Partnerships Between Organisms Interactions Increase Yields and Decrease Coastal Restoration Costs. We hope that pulling back the curtain on our processes will help increase understanding of the different dimensions of linking science with decisions and inspire greater transparency among the philanthropic community about the role we play.
