On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Dr. Mark Bravington discussed his research exploring the feasibility of a new genetic method to improve shortfin mako shark abundance estimates in the Atlantic Ocean. The approach, called close-kin mark-recapture, could help fisheries scientists develop more accurate stock assessments to inform effective management strategies for the species, which is overfished in the North Atlantic.
